    How It Started

From Disaster Response to Daily Rescue

Ruff Rough was born from Hurricane Katrina, where the founding team learned how much faster aerial coverage finds lost animals than ground searches alone. As consumer drone technology matured and FAA Part 107 certification opened skilled pilots to nonprofit work, Drones4Dogs became a natural extension of that mission.

Today the program runs year-round — not just during disasters. When a family dog goes missing in South Texas, our volunteer pilots launch search flights free of charge, often within hours.

    The Technology

Professional-grade drones, thermal imaging, and certified pilots — applied to the simple goal of getting your dog home.

    Aerial Coverage

Drones cover acres in minutes — finding what ground searches miss in dense brush, large rural property, or terrain that's unsafe on foot.

    Thermal Imaging

Heat-signature cameras locate dogs hidden in vegetation, under structures, or active at night when visual searches stall.

    GPS-Precise Locations

Pilots relay exact coordinates to ground teams the moment a dog is spotted — minutes matter, and we don't waste them.

    Coordinated Recovery

Drones never approach dogs directly. We locate; trained ground handlers and the family bring the dog home safely.

What to Expect from a Search

    1. Intake

You provide last-seen location, terrain photos, dog description, behavior notes (skittish, friendly, medical needs), and any sightings.

    2. Flight

A pilot deploys to the area and flies a planned grid pattern — visual by day, thermal at dawn, dusk, or night when heat signatures stand out best.

    3. Recovery

When the dog is spotted, coordinates go to the family and ground team. Drones never approach — you bring your dog home safely.

    Recent Success Stories

Real searches across South Texas. Names withheld to protect family privacy.

Lost in 200 Acres of Brush

A family dog vanished into a sprawling rural property after a thunderstorm. Ground searchers spent two days with no sign. A thermal flight at dawn located the dog in dense scrub within 40 minutes — recovered uninjured.

    Found After Dark

A senior dog slipped a leash and disappeared into a wooded greenbelt at dusk. A nighttime thermal search flagged a heat signature half a mile from home. Family reunited within the hour.

    Storm-Displaced and Hiding

After heavy flooding, a frightened rescue dog took shelter under a collapsed shed and refused to come out. The drone confirmed location and well-being so handlers could approach calmly with food and a long leash.

    Coverage Area

Drones4Dogs primarily serves the South-East Texas triangle — San Antonio, Houston, and Corpus Christi — with rapid deployment to surrounding counties. Outside our region? Contact us and we'll try to refer you to a partner team.
